Perfect Forgiveness: Freedom Begins When We Let Go
“Forgiveness is not saying the pain didn't happen. It is choosing to trust God with the justice while allowing Him to heal your heart. The moment I truly received God's forgiveness, I finally found the strength to forgive someone else.”
~Katrice Cornett
The Curse Stops Here

There are few subjects Jesus spoke about more consistently than forgiveness.
From the Sermon on the Mount to the cross itself, His message was clear: forgiveness is not optional for those who follow Him. His sacrifice was the ultimate expression of grace—the remission of sins we could never earn and certainly did not deserve.
Yet, if we're honest, forgiveness is often one of the hardest commands to obey.
We cling to offenses.
We replay conversations.
We justify bitterness.
We convince ourselves that withholding forgiveness somehow protects us from being hurt again.
But I've learned something through one of the most painful seasons of my life:
Unforgiveness doesn't imprison the other person—it imprisons you.

The Song God Wrote Through My Brokenness
The inspiration for my upcoming song, "Perfect Forgiveness," didn't begin in a recording studio.
It began in heartbreak.
In 2008, my husband and I were separated. More than a year had passed, and I found myself trapped between anger and disappointment.
I couldn't understand why he wouldn't simply apologize so we could move forward.
I was angry at him.
I was angry at myself.
If I am completely honest...
There were moments I was angry with God.
Nothing about my life looked the way I believed it should.
One Wednesday evening, I attended Bible study where a guest author shared his testimony about forgiveness.
I thought I understood forgiveness.
After all, I had heard sermons about it my entire life.
But that night, God revealed something I had never fully grasped.
Forgiveness wasn't primarily for the person who hurt me.
It was for me.
While I was waiting for someone else to change, bitterness was quietly destroying my own peace.
My relationship with God suffered because my heart remained occupied by resentment.
I couldn't experience His peace while refusing to release what I insisted on carrying.

Unforgiveness Changes You
Looking back, I realize how much unforgiveness had taken hold of my life.
Even when I wasn't actively thinking about the situation, it shaped my emotions.
If I imagined my husband moving on, I became angry.
If I thought he wasn't hurting the way I was, resentment grew.
Ironically, I had been the one who initially wanted the separation.
Yet my heart remained imprisoned by unresolved pain.
That is the deception of unforgiveness.
It convinces us that we're punishing someone else, while all along it's poisoning us.
When God Interrupted My Anger
Several years into our separation, one evening changed everything.
Although we were separated, there were still occasions when we found ourselves together because of family responsibilities.
One particular day I came home exhausted.
His words were cold.
His attitude felt harsh.
Every emotion inside me wanted to react.
As I sat down, trying to calm my thoughts, the Holy Spirit spoke quietly but clearly:
"Perfect forgiveness can only come from God."
Everything became still.
I grabbed a notebook and began writing as quickly as I could.
The words flowed almost faster than I could write them:
Perfect forgiveness from a perfect God.
For anyone who bows before Him.
Humbly submitting.
Willingly giving.
Confessing every part... straight from the heart.
Those words eventually became part of the spoken introduction to the song Perfect Forgiveness.
But before they became lyrics...
They became my prayer.

Forgiveness Is a Lifestyle
Ephesians 4:32 tells us:
"Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you."
Notice the order.
God forgave us first.
Before we deserved it.
Before we asked for it.
Before we understood it.
His forgiveness became the model for ours.
That doesn't mean forgiveness is easy.
It means it is possible.
Because His grace makes it possible.
The Curse Stops Here
Today I choose freedom over bitterness.
Grace over revenge.
Healing over resentment.
I refuse to allow yesterday's wounds to dictate tomorrow's relationships.
I have discovered that forgiveness is not weakness.
It is one of the strongest acts of faith a believer can choose.
Because every time I forgive...
I look a little more like Jesus.
The Curse Stops Here.
Reflection Questions
Is there someone you have been waiting to apologize before you forgive?
Have you received God's forgiveness for yourself, or are you still carrying shame?
What relationship has been affected by unresolved bitterness?
What would change if you surrendered your hurt to Christ today?
Prayer
Father God,
Thank You for loving me enough to send Jesus Christ to bear the punishment for my sins. Thank You for extending grace before I ever deserved it.
Search my heart today. Reveal every hidden place where unforgiveness has taken root. Remove bitterness, resentment, pride, and anger that keep me from walking in the freedom You desire for me.
Teach me to forgive as You have forgiven me—not because people always deserve it, but because Your grace has transformed my own life.
Where relationships can be restored, give me wisdom, humility, and courage. Where restoration is not possible, help me release every burden into Your hands and trust You with justice.
May my life become a testimony that Your love is stronger than pain and Your mercy is greater than my failures.
Thank You for making all things new.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
