My Secret Ingredient: The Power of God’s Love

“God’s love is not weak, passive, or powerless. It is the force that keeps me standing, helps me forgive, and allows me to love people beyond what my own heart could ever do.”

The Curse Stops Here

Secret

I am a child of God.

The righteousness of Christ belongs to me, and the same resurrection power that raised Jesus from the dead lives within me.

That means I am not powerless.

Through the Holy Spirit, God has given His children authority, spiritual gifts, discernment, faith, and the ability to become vessels through which miracles, healing, restoration, and transformation can take place.

But power must be activated.

A gift can be present and still remain unused.

A calling can be real and still remain undeveloped.

A dream can come from God and still require obedience before it produces fruit.

Understanding our purpose and consistently operating in it are two very different things.

We can talk about faith and never take a step.

We can recognize our gifts and still keep them hidden.

We can say we want God to use us while refusing the very opportunities He places in front of us.

I have learned that no matter how many ideas, dreams, talents, or spiritual gifts I possess, I cannot fulfill God’s purpose in my own strength.

For me, the secret ingredient is love.

God is Love

Love Activates What God Placed Within Us

God’s power is never intended to be separated from His character.

If our gifts are not rooted in love, we may be active, visible, and impressive, but we will not truly reflect Christ.

First Corinthians 13 reminds us that we can speak beautifully, understand mysteries, possess great faith, and even perform sacrificial acts, but without love, it amounts to nothing.

Love is what gives purpose to the gift.

Love is what keeps authority from becoming pride.

Love is what turns ministry into service.

Love is what allows the power of God to flow through us without becoming centered on us.

When God presents an opportunity for us to encourage, pray, serve, forgive, teach, or help someone, our response must begin with genuine love for people.

Not convenience.

Not recognition.

Not personal gain.

Love.

And the kind of love God requires cannot be manufactured through human effort. It must flow from our relationship with Him.

When Love Is Not Returned

Recently, I had a conversation with a friend who was struggling in an inconsistent relationship.

She was trying to understand why someone she continually treated with kindness could respond with coldness, hurtful behavior, and instability.

Many of us have experienced this.

We keep asking:

What am I doing wrong?

Why can’t they understand me?

Why do they continue to hurt me when I am trying to love them?

Sometimes we become so focused on changing another person’s behavior that we forget to ask God how He wants us to respond.

Scripture tells us that God is love.

This means our truest understanding of love must come from Him.

Someone may know Christian language, attend church, sing in the choir, or identify as a believer and still have areas of their heart that have not been surrendered to God.

Church attendance alone does not produce spiritual maturity.

Our love for one another is one of the clearest signs that Christ is truly working within us.

“Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”
—John 13:35

Love is the evidence.

Loving Does Not Mean Ignoring Harm

Loving people does not mean remaining available for repeated abuse, manipulation, or mistreatment.

God teaches us to guard our hearts, walk in wisdom, and establish healthy boundaries.

Love and boundaries can exist together.

You can forgive someone without giving them unrestricted access to your life.

You can pray for someone and still step away from an unhealthy pattern.

You can show compassion without making yourself responsible for repairing everything broken inside another person.

God’s love protects us while keeping our hearts free from hatred.

That is one of the miracles of His love.

It allows us to release resentment without returning to dysfunction.

It enables us to pray for people who wounded us without pretending the wound never happened.

It helps us see beyond someone’s behavior while still responding with wisdom.

Hurt People Often Hurt People

Many of the attacks we experience from others are not truly about us.

People may be reacting from their own pain, fear, rejection, confusion, or unresolved trauma.

That does not excuse harmful behavior.

But it can help us stop internalizing everything they do.

Some people do not understand why they respond the way they do.

They may be fighting battles we cannot see.

Without the healing and direction of God, people can become trapped in cycles that repeatedly wound themselves and everyone around them.

This is where the love of Christ becomes powerful.

God gives us the ability to see people through the lens of compassion without surrendering our peace.

We can say:

I will not hate you.

I will not allow bitterness to control me.

I will pray for your healing.

But I will also obey God concerning my boundaries.

That is love with wisdom.

Jesus

Love Covers Without Concealing

One of my favorite biblical truths is that love covers a multitude of sins.

“Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins.”
—1 Peter 4:8 NLT

This does not mean love hides abuse, protects wrongdoing, or prevents accountability.

It means love refuses to expose, embarrass, condemn, and retaliate unnecessarily.

Love creates room for repentance.

Love believes transformation is possible.

Love prays before it judges.

Love extends grace because it remembers how much grace it has received.

If we truly understood the depth of God’s love for the world, we would become less consumed with protecting our pride and more committed to helping people encounter Jesus.

God does not desire for anyone to be lost.

That means our homes, workplaces, churches, friendships, and communities are all opportunities to reveal His love.

We may not be able to reach the entire world at once.

But we can begin with the people already standing in front of us.

My Greatest Legacy

The power of love is my secret ingredient.

I receive so much joy from loving the people God sends into my path.

I may not always have money to give.

I may not always have the time or resources to solve someone’s problem.

But I can listen.

I can pray.

I can encourage.

I can show compassion.

I can make someone feel seen.

I can remind them that they matter to God.

To me, a life known for love is one of the greatest legacies anyone can leave behind.

Not simply being known for talent.

Not accomplishments.

Not titles.

Not influence.

Love.

The closer I grow to God, the more I want my life to reflect His heart.

“We love because He first loved us.”
—1 John 4:19

His love is the source.

His love is the standard.

His love is the power.

The Curse Stops Here

The cycle of bitterness stops here.

The need to retaliate stops here.

The habit of returning hurt for hurt stops here.

The belief that love makes me weak stops here.

I will love with wisdom.

I will forgive with boundaries.

I will serve with humility.

I will allow the Holy Spirit to activate every gift within me through the power of God’s love.

Because when love becomes the foundation, God can trust us with greater influence.

My secret ingredient is not charisma.

It is not talent.

It is not strength.

It is love.

And love never fails.

The Curse Stops Here.

Reflection Questions

  • Are your spiritual gifts and talents being motivated by love?

  • Is there someone whose behavior you have taken personally when they may be responding from their own pain?

  • Where might God be asking you to establish a loving but healthy boundary?

  • How can you intentionally show the love of Christ to someone this week?

Prayer

Father God,

Thank You for loving me first and showing me what true love looks like through Jesus Christ.

Fill me again with Your Spirit and teach me to love people from the overflow of my relationship with You. Remove every root of bitterness, pride, retaliation, selfish ambition, and resentment.

Help me use every gift, talent, idea, and opportunity You have given me for Your glory and for the good of others.

Give me wisdom to love without enabling harm, forgive without returning to unhealthy cycles, and establish boundaries without hatred.

Help me see people through Your eyes. Make me compassionate, discerning, patient, and obedient.

May my life prove that I belong to You—not only by what I say, sing, or accomplish, but by the way I love.

Let Your love become the secret ingredient in everything I do.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.
