The Curse Stops Here – Renewing Your Mind with God's Truth

Katrice Cornett

There was a time in my life when I didn't like who I was.

Middle school and high school were some of the most difficult years for my self-image. Like many young people, I believed what I saw in the mirror mattered more than what God saw in my heart.

I was always taller than my classmates. At the time, I didn't realize how deeply that affected me. While others laughed and thought their comments were harmless, many of the nicknames they gave me left wounds I carried long after the laughter ended.

Words have a way of lingering.

They become memories.

Memories become beliefs.

Beliefs begin to shape identity.

God created us for community. We were designed to love one another, encourage one another, bear one another's burdens, and build each other up. Healthy relationships should strengthen our confidence in who God created us to be.

But unhealthy relationships can do the opposite.

When criticism becomes louder than encouragement, when rejection becomes more familiar than acceptance, and when people's opinions begin to outweigh God's truth, our self-image slowly becomes distorted.

Without realizing it, we begin living according to what others have spoken over us instead of what God has declared about us.

The Seed of Self-Doubt

As I entered adulthood and continued pursuing the ministry God had called me to, I found myself fighting a different battle.

The music industry has a way of making you question everything.

Am I good enough?

Does my music matter?

Will anyone listen?

Should I change who I am to fit what everyone else is doing?

Rejection came from places I never expected.

Sometimes doors never opened.

Sometimes opportunities disappeared without explanation.

Sometimes the criticism came from complete strangers.

But the deepest wounds often came from people closest to me.

There were nights I wanted to quit.

I remember saying to myself,

"This is my last concert."

"I'm finished."

"Maybe this isn't what God really called me to do."

Looking back now, I realize I wasn't listening to God.

I was listening to every other voice.

Instead of remembering His promises...

I replayed their opinions.

Instead of standing on His Word...

I stood under their criticism.

That's exactly where the enemy wanted me.

When we internalize the wrong voice

When We Internalize the Wrong Voice

Negative words are like seeds.

If we keep replaying them, eventually they take root.

Before long, insecurity begins to grow where confidence once lived.

Fear replaces faith.

Comparison replaces contentment.

And purpose becomes clouded by doubt.

One of the most painful realizations in my journey was remembering there was a season when I wouldn't even sing the songs God had given me.

Can you imagine that?

The Creator of the universe trusted me with melodies born in His presence.

Songs He specifically placed in my spirit.

Yet I allowed the opinions of people to silence the voice of God in my life.

Looking back, I had to repent.

Not because I lacked talent.

But because I doubted the One who called me.

God's Opinion Is the Only One That Matters

Today I choose differently.

I've learned that my purpose was never dependent on applause.

It was never validated by industry acceptance.

It was never determined by critics.

It was established before I was born.

God created me for His purpose.

God called me according to His plan.

God equipped me with everything I need.

The same is true for you.

When rejection comes, I remind myself:

"Rejection is often God's redirection toward His greater purpose."

When insecurity whispers, I answer with Scripture.

When doubt rises, I replace it with truth.

Because God's promises have more authority than my feelings.

What God Says About Me

Instead of repeating the lies, I now declare His Word.

"I am fearfully and wonderfully made." (Psalm 139:14)

"I am more than a conqueror through Him who loved me." (Romans 8:37)

"No weapon formed against me shall prosper." (Isaiah 54:17)

Those aren't just encouraging verses.

They are my identity.

Psalm 139 reminds us that God knows us completely. There is nowhere we can go where He is not present. For those who belong to Christ, this truth brings incredible comfort. We are never unseen, never forgotten, and never abandoned.

Romans 8:37 reminds us that through Christ we don't simply survive life's battles—we overwhelmingly overcome them. Victory isn't something we're trying to earn. It's something Christ has already secured for us.

Isaiah 54:17 reminds us that criticism, accusations, rejection, and every weapon formed against God's children ultimately have no power to cancel His purpose. Our inheritance comes from Him—not from people's approval.

Walking in My Inheritance

I refuse to let the enemy convince me that my calling ended because someone rejected it.

I refuse to shrink to fit someone else's expectations.

I refuse to bury the gifts Heaven entrusted to me.

I know who I am.

I belong to Christ.

I am His daughter.

I am royalty.

I am an heir of God and a co-heir with Jesus Christ.

I will continue to sing.

I will continue to write.

I will continue to worship.

I will continue to encourage others.

Because this life has never been about building my kingdom.

It's about building His.

And from this day forward...

The Curse Stops Here.

Reflection Questions

  • Whose opinion has had the greatest influence on how you see yourself?

  • What words have you believed that God never spoke over your life?

  • Have rejection or disappointment caused you to hide gifts God intended you to use?

  • What promise from God's Word do you need to declare over yourself today?

Prayer

Prayer

Father God,

Thank You for reminding me that my identity is rooted in You—not in people's opinions or life's disappointments. Forgive me for allowing rejection, criticism, and insecurity to shape the way I see myself.

Renew my mind with Your truth. Strengthen my heart to stand on every promise You have spoken over my life. Help me remember the dreams, visions, and calling You placed inside me before anyone else's opinion ever existed.

When rejection comes, remind me that You have already accepted me.

When fear rises, remind me that You have already equipped me.

When discouragement whispers, let Your voice speak louder.

I surrender every insecurity, every comparison, and every negative seed planted by the enemy. Fill me with confidence that comes only from knowing I belong to You.

I choose today to walk boldly in my purpose, my calling, and my inheritance as Your child.

In Jesus' name,

Amen.
